Bogus Callers
"The average age of a victim of bogus callers is 78, and 74% of victims live alone" (Source: Home Office) |
Fortunately, distraction buglary by bogus callers is very rare on the Wirral.
However, we want to keep all our residents informed about the risk of 'bogus callers' - people who call at your home and trick their way inside in order to steal.
We have even introduced a small number of No Cold Caller Zones across the borough. This means it is actually illegal for a Cold Caller to ply their trade and disturb residents in these sign-posted areas.

You can take some simple steps to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime due to bogus callers:
| Stop Think - are you expecting any callers? Do they have an appointment? Chain Secure the door bar or chain before opening the door Check Demand and double check the caller's ID. Tip: Don't use a phone number supplied by the caller or one from their ID. Check it against a phonebook or even the internet if you have a computer close by. Alterntively, have a look at this useful guide: id card example.jpg. |
Remember, all WPH staff calling at your property will carry an ID card. Before you even speak to them, ask to see it, and keep the door on the chain while you look it over.
If you are the victim of a Bogus Caller, don't be embarassed. Phone the police on 999 and give us a call for a free Home Security Check on 0151 666 7084 or click crimereduction@wphomes.org.uk
