Home Ownership
If you were a secure tenant of Wirral Council before transfer in February 2005, you may have the Preserved Right to Buy your home under the Housing Act 1985. If you were a new tenant after the 7th February 2005, then you may have the Right to Acquire.
The WPH Home Ownership Team deals with all sales of WPH homes, after sales service and Leasehold Management. Our advice to tenants who are thinking of buying their WPH home is to contact the Home Ownership Team. You can talk to us without making any commitments, we will give you advice on what you should do next.
Think about the costs involved
Owning your own home can be expensive, and only you can know if buying it is the right decision for you. For more advice, Contact Us, the Citizen's Advice Bureau or a solicitor (solicitors may charge for advice).
Flats and maisonettes
These cannot be sold freehold but the long-term lease can be bought for a fixed period (usually 125 years) with an annual ground rent of £10. If you are considering buying your flat or maisonette WPH will give you an estimate of what the annual Service Charges will be for the first 5 years of your lease. More information about WPH leaseholders.
Beware of Right to Buy Companies
The Government and WPH are concerned that tenants who take up some Right to Buy offers may be talked into commitments they cannot afford. In some cases tenants are paying hundreds or even thousands of pounds for some services they are entitled to free from WPH under the Right to Buy rules. Please be wary and speak to our Home Ownership team if you need advice.
