A longstanding issue for residents of the Woodchurch estate has been addressed by Wirral Partnership Homes, in partnership with Wirral Council and local community group, the Woodchurch Trust.

The problem of residents double-parking on the road or parking on grass verges on New Hey Road was an issue that local residents raised as a concern during meetings of the Woodchurch Neighbourhood Management team’s Liveability task group.

Residents were worried about road safety and also about the damage caused to grass verges.

Work on a new car park was funded by the Wirral Partnership Homes and Neighbourhood Management Project and was co-ordinated by the Council’s Technical Services department.  The car park was completed last month.

David Rooke, Director of Regeneration at Wirral Partnership Homes, said: “We love to say, “you said it, we did it!”. It’s fantastic that partnership working by Wirral Partnership Homes and Wirral Council tackled these car parking problems that residents faced.

“Wirral Partnership Homes is a key member of the Liveability group and this group identified car parking in this particular area as a major priority. We decided to help to resolve the problem and were delighted to contribute to the costs of the work, as well as other key projects in the neighbourhood.”

Sheila Henry from the Woodchurch Neighbourhood Management Project added, “It is often relatively little things that make such a big difference to residents. Taking local action, based on the unique priorities identified by the people who lives are directly affected is one of the key aspects of Neighbourhood Management.

“This is just one of the ways in which Neighbourhood Management and partnership-working is making a difference in Woodchurch, and we are delighted to see the progress made.”

Local resident Sheila Bevington said, “The car park has made a huge difference to the residents.  It is safer for our children and helps to protect our cars from damage.  The grass verge is no longer being destroyed by cars which makes the estate look nicer.”

Notes for editors

The Woodchurch Neighbourhood Management Programme was set up by Wirral Council in 2006 and task groups, of which the Liveability group (which looks at environmental issues) is one, were part of that. Task groups include service providers and residents. The Liveability task group is strongly led by residents who have been instrumental in numerous activities in Woodchurch.

Members of the Liveability task group carried out consultation with residents to identify priorities around liveability issues, one of the high priorities was road safety and car parking, particularly on New Hey Road.
