Following a recent spate of vandalism in Birkenhead, Wirral Partnership Homes (WPH) targeted the area in partnership with Merseyside Police and identified a number of youths responsible for graffiti on properties.
In the first of its kind for WPH, the youths were given a choice. Either face prosecution and action against tenancies or clean up. All chose to clean the area of graffiti.
Sam Brown, WPH Tenancy Enforcement Officer, said, “We will work with our partners to take action against those responsible and will use all methods available to us to deal with Anti-Social Behaviour. This scheme was a huge success. Those responsible for the graffiti were enthusiastic about painting it out and other youths in the area volunteered to help.”
Inspector McGregor, Merseyside Police, said, “Community problems often require community solutions. This initiative can show that by listening to concerns raised by residents, Merseyside Police, working with WPH, will target priorities and offenders highlighted to us. These young men have shown that they recognise when they have caused damage to the community and have made amends. We now look forward to working with them in terms of further positive actions which will include providing diversionary activities.”
Brain Simpson, Chief Executive for WPH, said, “Let me be absolutely clear, we will not tolerate vandalism to our properties or in our communities.”
