Over 100 Green fingered Wirral Partnership Homes (WPH) residents took part in this year’s WPH garden competition. Winners were announced on Thursday 8 September at a ceremony held at the Lauries Centre in Birkenhead and awards were presented by the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Gerry Ellis.
The annual competition was sponsored by grass cutting contractor Sodexo. Awards gave recognition to residents who had taken the time and effort to keep front gardens and communal areas tidy and attractive.
This year saw the introduction of the new ‘Environmental Award’ for schools and residents’ groups. Funded by WPH and Sodexo, two £500 awards were presented to help groups to fulfil their plans to create new gardens. The winners were Ridgeway High School – with a plan to repair their vandalised school garden and Coronation Buildings residents’ group - who had drawn up plans to create a new communal garden area.
Resident and award winner Ms Bowers, 83 said “I love choosing plants and taking care of my garden. It gets me outside every day and is very good for you.”
Nigel Payne, Sodexo said “I go to events like this up and down the country and Wirral really stands out for its sense of community spirit.”
Jayne Winders, Director of Housing Services, WPH said “These gardens are outstanding and make a real difference to the appearance of our neighbourhoods. The awards evening shows WPH’s appreciation for residents’ effort.
